Style your windows the Scandinavian way.
In my native culture the dark and long winters make homeowners chaise the natural light. Blinds and heavy curtains are a rare sight, but the windows are not left bare. They are used as indoor focal points, and as opportunities to add curbside appeal.
Below are four key elements for styling your windows the Scandinavian way
1. Create deeper windowsills. With the U.S. standard of barely three inches there are limited room for adding décor. If you are remodeling or building new, consider adding a few inches, extending your windowsills to about six or seven inches. It does not add much cost if done up front. If you don’t have this ability, try adding a console or a narrow bench just below the window.
2. Remove blinds and curtains wherever you can! If you need shade from the sun or simply want more privacy, opt for lighter drapes hung from a ceiling track or Roman shades that can be pulled away from the window during the day.
3. Decorate with plants and objects just like you would on a wall shelf. Different heights and a mix of plants and objects add interest.
4. Lastly, use window lights and small lamps. Consider how cozy it would be to walk the neighborhood if everyone added a few lights to their windows facing the curbside, and a layered lighting plan with smaller lamps adding ambiance to your rooms at night.
